No all that surprising, Colorado has many cities in the list.

Lists like these are always kind of fun to look at but they guarantee nothing.

Simple formula to have an outdoor child:

Be a parent that is active outdoors

Be active as a family outdoors

This formula can happen anywhere. No excuses!

A couple days ago I was wearing my Ironman triathlon world championships t-shirt that I purchased when Wendy and I watched the big event in Kona back in 2003 during my triathlon days.

My two year old son (Griffin) is all about letters right now and he was saying the various ones he noticed on my shirt. I pointed out to him the Ironman logo which is an ‘M’ with a dot above it pronounced as “M-dot”.

Ironman t-shirt with the big old M-dot.

The next day I happened to wear the same t-shirt around the house, and Griffin let me know the name of this new symbol so I had to record it and share. I smiled – a lot.

I am no longer talking about 6 hour rides, more like 15-30 minutes so far. You gotta start somewhere.

We recently purchased the iBert Safe-T-Seat so that we all can go for some rides together now that the weather will be gradually cooling off in the south.

The biggest challenge of this entire adventure was getting Griffin comfortable sitting in the little seat. We ended up putting a stuffed animal (bunny) with Griffin’s helmet on the seat to show him what it would be like. It worked! Getting the helmet on was a bit more work but before long he was pointing out every car, truck, plane, and dog. I think he was lovin it and so was I.

Here are a couple pics from our ride. Ibert review coming soon.

Well, we made it to the big city! It hasn’t been without some personal growth moments.

The flight over was fairly smooth except for Griffin (1 yr old son) wanting to explore the entire plane. This tested both Wendy and I since this took place for the entire first two hours of the flight. We received a few head turns and all of that good stuff be we just tried the best that we could. This is our first flight with G now that he is more mobile and vocal. This was much more challenging than we were expecting. Surprise! Griffin finally fell asleep for the last hour or so.

While waiting for our luggage I noticed some Boston marathon banners to remind us about this special trip. The main theme that was running through my head was…car…sleep.

After swapping out the initial rental car because it didn’t work with our car seat, we made it to the Holiday Inn Express at about 1 am. With Griffin fast asleep, we work up to our room and lay Griffin in the pack-n-play positioned in the New York style room. Which translates into being a bit tight, but cozy. Wendy and I begin to get ready for bed and Griffin wakes up and is wired! After many various technique attempts to get G to sleep again, we resorted to something we have never done before…we got in the rental and drove up and down a local road…with G. When it was all said and done we were asleep around 3:30 am.

Griffin had a little wake-up at 6:30am and up for good at 8am. About two hours too early in our minds but such is parenthood. Sometimes you just have to roll with it.

We kept rolling and made our way down to the first floor to get in a bit of breakfast. The hotel had a nice continental spread. Always a bonus when there is warm food. I ate a cinnamon/raisin bagel, cheese omelet, orange, banana, oatmeal, and a bunch of water. Looking at the list now, that was a lot of food but it sure tasted good!

The plans for the rest of the day:

Try and get Griffin down for a good nap this morning. (Currently in progress!)

Head down to the expo to pick up my race packet.

Possibly meet with some friends of ours that live in the city.

Go for a two mile run.

Pick up some supplies at a local grocery store.

Maybe even get some more sleep. I said maybe.

We stepped outside after eating breakfast and it was absolutely beautiful conditions. Sunny, low winds, and extremely mild temps. Good thing, because I forget my jacket at home.

Even with all of the challenges that have taken place already, I cannot be more grateful to have my family here to share in this experience together.

More updates later in the day!

The countdown is on!

Saturday was the first official race start for the entire family at the Tal Morrison Classic! Wendy was running the 5k and Griffin and I took on the 15k.

Whenever we have something going on early in the morning, Griffin decides to sleep in. Funny stuff. Most mornings he wakes up between 6:15-6:30 am but on race morning he decided to start moving around at about 6:50 am. We wanted to be driving be 7:00 am. Well, that didn’t happen.

After some quick breakfast for Griffin and gathering a few of his essentials, we were out the door at 7:15 am. Drive time approximately 30 minutes. Race start 8 am.

The race took place at White Rock Lake which is a popular running, cycling, and general park in Dallas. The distance around the lake is a bit over 9 miles. Perfect for a 15k event.

After arriving at the race site at 7:45 am, I parked and ran what seemed like a quarter mile to pick up our race numbers while Wendy fed Griffin one last time. Interestingly enough, I was not able to find my number right away, nor could the volunteers. Finally my number was found and I grabbed Wendy’s number and ran back to the car.

After trotting up a nice little hill back to the car I gave Wendy her number and put Griffin in his jogger and we were off to find the race start. I had just heard the horn to start the race at this point.

Like all smart women, Wendy had to use the facilities before she started to bounce that bladder. Griffin and I jogged to the race start. Wendy and I both found each other again at the race start and finally began our races about three minutes (a guess) behind the official start time. I had to run a loop around the lake counter-clockwise and Wendy had an out-and-back run starting in the opposite direction.

This would be the longest run Griffin and I had ever done with the jogger. We quickly started cruising along as Griffin securely held on to my keys and watched the scenery pass by. Fortunately the course was mostly flat with only minor grade changes.

We eventually started catching some runners as I was pushing a fairly solid effort level. Griffin seemed to enjoy seeing all of the people. A few people along the way jokingly said, “Make me feel bad, being passed by a jog stroller”. Sorry.

Every few miles, I would tell Griffin how may miles we have left and would ask how he was doing. I would get a “um” and “guh” (Griffin is almost 1.). I took that as a positive response and kept ticking through the miles. At times I thought he may be asleep so I would slow down and take a peek at his face. His eyes were wide open but relaxed.

At about the seven mile mark I caught up with Stephanie and we jogged in the last two miles. Stephanie was enjoying her longest run since the Houston marathon. Griffin and I were about to complete our first race together and put the running jogger through a pretty good test. I had a great time with Griffin and it was neat to sense that he enjoyed it as well. Plenty more of that to come little G-man.

Wendy was able to successfully trot/walk her way through the 5k with some tight shins and hamstrings. As with all 5k runs, Wendy’s favorite part of the race is when she crosses that finish line. Good job babe!
