Foothills FA 50 km 2013 Results

Not since the Skyrunner series or Western States has a more competitive field gathered for an ultramarathon. Runners traveled from all over the world: as far as Rio Rancho, NM and Edgewood, NM to battle it out in the second race of the 2012-2013 Albuquerque Fat Ass 50k series – the Foothills Fat Ass 50k on New Year’s Day. Your beloved Endurance Buzz contributors had trained hard all year and were ready to compete!

OK, OK, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration. In the spirit of Fat Ass 50ks everywhere, fun and camaraderie were the order for the day, and 20 runners took off from organizer Kelley Garcia’s house to start the New Year off right. There were no fees, no awards, and every runner, regardless of distance, was recognized as a finisher. For their free entry, runners were treated with a fresh coating of snow that made for spectacular views of the Sandia Mountains, a fully marked course, two aid stations, and tons of food and drinks at the finish.

The snow didn’t slow down fellow Endurance Buzz contributor, Jason Taylor. He blew everyone else away by finishing in a course record of 4:56. Roger Squires showed a big improvement from last year and finished second, while I nursed my New Year’s hangover and finished third.

Kathy Kirsling, at 64 years young, was the first female, followed by Kelley Garcia. Another amazing performance was Richard Harris, who at age 72, finished the marathon distance.
