Battlefield Trail Run 2012 Results – Edwin Koenck and Stephanie Kalozdi Escape Certain Death in Win

The final race of the burn-it-up Forge Trail Series took place at Port Hudson State Historical Site in Jackson, Louisiana. The Battlefield Trail Run presented a 6-ish mile scamper that included some well groomed dirt, roots, rocks, a few hills, and a segment called Certain Death. You signed the race waiver, right?

Beautiful weather added to the joy of a morning of play.

Men’s Race

Friendly rivals, Edwin Koenck and Adam “The Hulk” Hoogewind were back for their third race of the series. Neither were in top form but both ready to lay it down and see what happens.

Adam took to the front in the early miles with confidence building.

“I had a pretty good feeling about halfway through when it seemed like I was starting to pull away from him.”

When you run at your limits, dancing on the crack of vomit-ville, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

With 1.5 miles to go, Adam ran into that invisible object that many of us have seen a time or two.

“I just hit the wall. It was a death march.”

As Edwin made the pass along some tight singletrack, Adam had one light-hearted option left.

“It took a lot of restraint to keep myself from throwing an accidental elbow when he passed me.”

Trail running a contact sport? Maybe!

Edwin dogged any flying limbs and crossed the finish first in 34:07. This also placed Edwin in a first place tie for the series win with Mr. Donkey Fitzwilliam who didn’t race at this one.

Adam kept it together to finish second, a little over 40 seconds later. Adam also earned second in the race series.

Race Reports

  • “There was a treacherous section, aptly named Certain Death at a turnaround point. The trail narrowed to a thread, with a big drop off to the right and tough downhill footing over rocks and a downed tree.” by The Ale Runner @ The Ale Runner
