Mount Magazine Trail Run – 2012 Results

The final race of the AURA Ultra Trail Series guided runners along scenic trail with majestic views to the highest point in the state at 2753 feet. Light rain at the start made for a packed trail and mild temps. Over 40 laced them up for an 18-ish mile (or shorter) adventure at the Mount Magazine Trail Run located on the trails at Mount Magazine State Park in Paris, Arkansas.

18 mile

The male race saw an exciting scamper at the front with Clayton Bell, Chris Block, PoDog Vogler, and David Joseph all taking the pole position at some time during this fun little scamper. Clayton and Chris took off like missiles at the start before they took on some bonus trail after missing a turn. This brought the group back together as they cruised into the final climb of the day. PoDog shares how it played out…

“I was last going up the hill but moved past Clayton and David and was about a minute behind Chris still going uphill when Clayton passed back by me. I have to say, I’m not used to being passed on an uphill when I’m in shape, but Clayton went by me and I couldn’t do anything about it. He caught up with Chris about the top of the hill.”

As the course flattened with two miles to go, PoDog bridged the small gap and latched onto Clayton and Chris. David had drifted back a bit.

In the push to the finish, Clayton and Chris were able to accelerate and create a small gap between themselves and PoDog, before finishing one and two.

Deb Baker closed off the top 10 of the overall and won the female adventure in 3:17:11.

Deb’s reflections on the day.

“I remembered how much I enjoyed the course last year but forget about how long the climb back up Signal Hill was. The run down is so lush and beautiful with lots of twists and turns. When you reach the road at the bottom it’s time to turn around and it’s a long three mile climb back up. Lots of food and good fellowship as always at the finish.”

Shelly Chronister cruised in for second.
