Arkansas Traveller 100 Team Challenge – Which State Will Bring Home The Bling?

Do you know about the unique and fun state-team component of the Arkansas Traveller 100 mile adventure that takes place on October 1-2? I didn’t, but thanks to a wise ultra running veteran in New Mexico, I have gained a bit of TALON trail running awareness.

The bread and butter basics…

  • You are automatically included on the team associated with your state of residence. If you are outside the U.S., you are included in the International team.
  • All individual finish times are age and gender adjusted.  This becomes a bit of a equalizer and essentially means the wiser athletes will have a lower adjusted time. (check out the age/gender multiplier list)
  • The four lowest age/gender adjusted times are combined to determine the state team time.
  • The kicker – You need four finishers from your state to have a chance to bring home the traveling bling and show it to all your friends, relatives, neighbors, city council members, and local news affiliates until the following year’s race!

The last few years has seen between 5-7 teams with the Arkansas crew taking home the trophy since 2003. These home turf runners have definitely raised the inspiration bar and have persevered through a couple exciting challenges from the Oklahoma team in 2008 (16+ minutes behind Arkansas) and the Texas team in 2003 (7+ minutes behind Arkansas).

Since the inception of this additional little competition, the traveling bling has gone to Arkansas or Texas. Great to see this snazzy award remain in the TALON region but will a new state or international team have the hunger, the steady feet, and a little bit of luck, to take on the Arkansas trail running Juggernauts? Could New Mexico, Oklahoma, or Louisiana surprise the region and become the first TALON state besides Arkansas or Texas to bring home the trophy?

Current State Status

Which states have the numbers (four signed up) to be considered a team assuming all finish (based on a quick look at entrants)?

  • Arkansas
  • Texas
  • Tennessee
  • International
  • Alabama
  • Missouri
  • Illinois

Status of remaining TALON region.

  • New Mexico – 1 runner short
  • Louisiana – 2 runners short
  • Oklahoma – 2 runners short

Who wants it?

The Arkansas Traveller is one of three great 100 mile races in the TALON region for the month of October. October often brings cooler temperatures, dryer air, changing colors, and is one of my favorite running months of the year.
