Pumpkin Holler Hunnerd – New 100 Mile Run in the TALON Region
By David Hanenburg on 21 Apr 2011 at 2:08 pm | Tagged as: race news
There are not many 100 mile races in the TALON region so when a new one arrives, it can be pulse raising, jaw dropping, and schedule planning news. Take a couple deep breaths because a new 100 miler has just been added to the regional calendar.
This new ultra adventure is in Oklahoma and is created by the run/fun lovin’ and experienced TATUR crew from Tulsa and is called the Pumpkin Holler Hunnerd.

Date
The running experience dates are set for October 15 and 16 and is snuggled within the most popular month for 100 mile races in the TALON region.

How full of a month is it? Apparently I am not the only one that thinks October may be the sweetest month of trail running in this area of the country. The Arkansas Traveller 100 (AR) kicks off the month, then the Pumpkin Holler Hunnerd (OK), followed by Syllamo 100 (AR, cancelled last year), (yep, still one more) and the month closes with the Cactus Rose 100 (TX). I see an interesting ultra challenge of some sort here…but better leave that alone for now.
Course
The Pumpkin Holler Hunnerd run party occurs within the scenic J.T. Nickel Preserve, about 2112.7 stone throws (~60 miles) east of Tulsa and is the largest privately protected conservation area in the Ozarks. While the variety of race page photos highlight the rolling terrain in the area, the run course is “relatively flat” and occurs mostly on dirt road.

Currently the main loop is a 31.1 mile clockwise loop with 28 miles on non-technical dirt road and 3 miles on the hard stuff (pavement). It is expected to be a fast course as far as ultra times go.

You can be hopeful for the leaves to be on visual (not literal) fire as we move through the Fall season.
Sub 100 Mile Options
For those that aren’t in the 100 mile mood, the event also provides a 100 km and 50 km journey to satisfy your running palate.
