TALON Dirt and Distance: USATF National Trail Running Championships – TNF EC 50 Championship

Here are a couple items that caught my attention this week.

USA Track & Field National Trail Championships

In 2011, the 100 km and 50 mile USA Track & Field National Trail Championships will be held in the TALON region. For an area of the country that doesn’t generally get a lot of trail running buzz, I think this is pretty cool and highlights the quality of events we have in the region.

Joe Prusaitis and the experienced Tejas Trails team will be hosting both races.

The 100 km championship will be at the Bandera trail run on January 8 in Bandera, Texas (just north of San Antonio). The 50 mile championship will be at the Nueces trail run on March 5th in Rocksprings, Texas (also near San Antonio).

For you speedy boys and girls, there is a small cash purse ($500 / $350 / $150) if you earn a 1st-3rd placing in either trail championship. You also need a a USA Track & Field membership and a few other details that are clearly listed on the Tejas Trails site.

These races are yet to be listed on the USA Track & Field National Championships listing, which I think is kind of odd but I am sure Joe knows if his event is hosting.

Also, Bandera is also part of the 2011 Montrail Ultra Cup series so expect plenty of fast tread from around the country getting dirty in the Texas Hill Country.

The North Face Endurance Challenge 50 Mile Championship

Last weekend, many of the fastest trail runners in the country and even some from throughout the world inspired each other at The North Face Endurance Challenge 50 Mile Championship in the Marin Headlands just north of San Franscisco, California.

Nearly 300 athletes participated in the 50 mile race which included some of our very own TALON athletes. If I can decode race results using only a city to define the state of residence, Liza Howard had the fastest feet from the region and earned a top 10 placing in the female race. Pretty cool!

Who all played from the region?

  • Liza Howard (TX) – 8:48:56 – 35th Overall, 7th Female – Race Report and Lessons Learned
  • Preston Teel (TX) – 9:52:10 – 67th Overall, 50th Male
  • Steve Berrones (TX) – 10:15:47 – 79th Overall, 60th Male
  • Neil Blake (NM) – 10:29:47 – 87th Overall, 66th Male
  • Monica Embers (LA) – 11:48:32 – 147th Overall, 32nd Female

A big congrats to all of the runners! If you know of athletes I missed, please mention them in the comments and I will add them to the list.
