Rocky Raccoon 100 Trail Run 2010 Results

rocky-raccoon-trail-run-201Over the weekend trail runners were provided sunny skies, mild temps, and a great trail for the 18th Annual Rocky Raccoon 100 and 50 mile trail run at Huntsville State Park in southeast Texas. There were 640 athletes from around the world that officially started the 6 am send-of for the 100 milers and the 7 am start for the 50 mile runners. And yes, another course record was broken…twice!

The Course

The rain earlier in the weeks created a couple puddles to slosh through but any sandy areas were packed creating solid footing throughout the course assuming one of the strategically scattered  roots didn’t grab your toe.

The 100 mile athletes enjoyed five 20 mile loops within the forested park consisting of  mostly pine needle covered double-wide single-track with a couple sections of packed park dirt road (no vehicle traffic). Athletes also enjoyed nice views of the glistening water of Lake Raven in which the course traveled around.

The 50 mile trail runners enjoyed three 16.67 mile loops on much of the same course as the 100 milers besides a short cut-across trail that created the proper loop mileage.

There were 344 anxious and excited athletes that began the 100 mile trail run with hopes of finishing within the 30 hour time limit. The finish line saw 216 (63%) of them cross within the alloted time. This finish rate is about 5% lower than the last few years.

The female race was nearly flown through by 2009 Cactus Rose 100 overall winner and Texan,  Elizabeth Howard, with a smokin’ time of 15:45:03. Howard’s time was comfortably 2nd overall and also the 2nd fastest female time for this event. Jamie Donaldson controlled second place with 16:54:14 and sixth overall.

The Tough-as-Nails Award

nails1The final finishers of an ultra distance event are some of the toughest athletes that are willing to stick with it to the best of their current ability and cross that darn finish line.

The Tough-as-Nails award recipients:

  • 100 mile: Vicki Griffiths (WA) showed huge courage and determination to finish the 100 mile journey in 29:50:10.
  • 50 mile: Peter Raybourn (TX) would not be denied and finished the 50 mile course in 22:35:01.

Complete 100 and 50 mile results.

Special Note:

Monica Scholz (Canada) completed her second 100 of the year at Rocky with a time of 21:38:26. This is impressive in itself but Scholz plans to run over 30 (yes, 3-0!) 100 mile ultras in 2010 and completely crush her 2001 world record of 23 100 milers. Check out the article at Monumental Effort which contains her tentative schedule. Um…um…um…wow and good luck.

Congrats to all athletes that enjoyed a day of running on a Texas trail.
