Hammer Nutrition News and Product Giveaway

Montana based, Hammer Nutrition, continues to evolve and grow as we move into 2010.
Hammer products have been one of my favorite sports nutrition companies for nearly 10 years because their goal is to create solid products that support your athletic goals while not negatively affecting your overall health. So you won’t see artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners. All products are also gluten free.
Another quality I like about the products are the subtle flavors will not shock-and-awe your taste buds. Over many hours of continuous use, this can be appreciated.
One great thing I just found out about their whey protein:
Relative to the WPI that is the key ingredient for Hammer Whey and Recoverite, the milk source is grass-fed cows that do not have antibiotics. Every load that is taken into the plant for processing is tested for antibiotics/hormones and rejected if it contains said. As a result, both Hammer Whey and Recoverite contain the purest form of WPI.
A few additional Hammer Nutrition aspects I like:
Hammer Gel Jugs – The Hammer Gel has the option to be purchased in bulk jugs and used with a re-usable flask. This provide great value for you and then the bottles can be recycled when you have used up all the product. No wrappers to toss in the garbage.- Bulk Powders – You have the option of purchasing the Hammer powder products in bulk-like quantity sizes (ex: HEED – 80 servings). This not only lowers your cost per serving but also reduces the environmental impact.
- Endurance Sports Fueling Guide – Hammer put together a guide that can provide a great baseline of information to help you with your endurance sports adventures. Much of the information is not Hammer Nutrition product specific so whether you use their products or not, you can receive plenty of useful information to help you figure out what works best for you. This document was my jump-start.
Also cool, in 2009, they helped support over 2000 events ranging from triathlon, ultra running and cycling, adventure races, paddle/water sports, motocross, and various winter sports.
The Hammer products I am using right now are HEED (powder electrolyte drink), Endurolytes (electrolyte supplementation), and Hammer Gel (gel-based calories).
New in 2010
Here are a few of the things coming down the Hammer Nutrition pipe in 2010:
- Huckleberry Hammer Gel – A new Hammer gel flavor is available, Huckleberry (wild-harvested in Montana). The product may or may not be available year round based on the product demand and limited amount of Hucks that can be collected.
- Chocolate Recoverite – Recoverite is Hammer’s post-workout recovery product and it will soon be available in Chocolate flavor. The current flavors are Strawberry and Citrus.
- Reducing Environmental Impact – Throughout the early part of 2010, all plastic jugs used for the powder products will be replaced with a more eco-friendly re-sealable zippered bag. This is cool!
Quick Melon HEED Review
Throughout this fall/winter I have tried out the Melon flavored HEED. The only flavors I have used previously were Mandarin Orange (had been my favorite) and Lemon-Lime.
The subtle honeydew-ish flavor quickly reminded me of my youth and the days of chewing gum like Hubba Bubba. Although I wouldn’t put Hubba Bubba in my mouth today, Melon HEED is now my favorite flavor with Mandarin Orange a close second.
I used Melon HEED as one of my fuel sources throughout my Bandera 100 km trail running adventure and I never grew sick of it through 14+ hours of use. Of course we are all unique, but this was my significant test with the product.
Hammer Discount

Nice giveaway! I happen to like HEED, although in my experience working aid stations I’ve noticed quite a few people who can’t stand it. I guess we’re all different.
My next race big race is the Tacoma City Marathon in May. It will be my first marathon in over 2 years so I’m very much looking forward to it. Then I have some other marathons and 50k’s planned throughout the summer.
Thanks for the heads up on what’s new and upcoming from Hammer.
My next big race is the Coeur d’Alene Marathon at the end of May.
My big running goal is to run a half marathon in 2010. I’ve always wimped out at around 7 miles, so this will be a challenge for me!
I am planning on running the “Skyline to the Sea” trail 50k out on the west coast…it runs from the mountains above Los Gatos, CA to the beach…all on sweet single track under a redwood canopy. Been recovering from a pretty jacked IT band over the last 2 months so that has set me back a little in chasing my initial goals but this is the first next big step!
I have a SUPER sensitive stomach, and Hammer is the only gel I used at the Bandera 100K. No fructose! Their Perpetum is really good as well for long distance adventures. Hammer is too legit to quit.
I am getting ready for the Massanutten 100 in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of Viginia.
I have several ultras planned for this year but the first one is the Trail Mix 50k in April.
I’ve got quite a few races planned for this year, but my big goal for the first half of the year is the Nueces 50 miler in March! Great web site by the way.
Sarah – Good luck at Tacoma City!
Rick – I have fond memories of Coeur d’Alene. I did an Ironman throughout the beautiful area. Loved it.
Jackie – Awesome. Enjoy the half marathon journey.
Brandon – The trail sounds awesome. Happy healing!
Patton – The challenge and the beauty. Yeah!
Dylan – Sounds like a great start to the spring.
Jeff – I really dig the pics on the race site. Looks like a cool race.
I’m going to try the Seven Sisters race in Amherst, Ma this year. I’m also planning on doing my first 50k… race to be determined!
Funny you should ask… Samantha and I were just talking about that the other day. My real goal is to drop twenty pounds so when I run, I don’t feel like I’m carrying a backpack around.
To that end, Sam wants to run the Rock and Roll Half Marathon in March. I’d like to go back and do some trail runs, even if I’m nowhere near being able to do an ultra. I think just being at, for example, Cross Timbers, would be a good motivation for me.
Kelly – Seven Sisters sounds like a nice challenge. 12 miles, rocky, 3700 ft of climb. Nice.
Jay – Awesome! We will have to meet up at a trail or race in the near future. Good luck to both Samantha and yourself in your running journey. The half mary should be a good time as well. Wendy ran her first half at White Rock and really had a comfortable day with minimal/consistent training. It was fun being on the support side.
I’m a big fan of Hammer products. I use sustained energy and heed mixed, endurolytes, and gel in a fuel bottle. I loathe the little foil packs. Fuel bottle is the way to go.
Sorry I missed your contest.
Greg
Hey Greg – Nice Hammer fuel mix. I also do not use the little Hammer Gel packets for my training or racing but they did work well for this giveaway situation. The little packets can be nice to determine which flavor(s) you like. After that, buy the Hammer jug (cheaper and less waste).
There will be more fun contests in the future.
