Trail Running Course

Big Bend 50 Ultramarathon Coming In January 2011

trail-running-announcementWell it didn’t take long for the Texas trail running event in Big Bend National Park to become a reality.

Event Name: Big Bend 50

The date is set for January 16, 2011.

The event plans to have a 50 km and 25 km trail race. The race organizers also plan to include a 10 km road (I think) race.

From the press release:

It starts at 3,200 feet (975 meters) and drops to 1,900 feet (579 meters), so it’s a steady downhill race on the park dirt roads. The 50K course goes down Black Gap Road, which many park visitors have not seen, then on to River Road, and back past the Mariscal mercury-cinnabar mines to Glen Spring Road.

The course sounds fast with stable footing. I tried to figure out the course from the park map but couldn’t quite figure it out. A race map should be coming soon.

This race definitely seems like the antithesis of Bandera, which will most likely be held one week earlier.

This could make an interesting challenge:

  • 50 km / 50 km Bandera-Big Bend Double – 50 km trail race at both events.
  • 150 km Bandera-Big Bend Double – 100 km at Bandera and 50 km at Big Bend 50.

Who’s in?  🙂

You can check out the Big Bend 50 Event Information folder for their current press release and lodging information. This folder will continue to grow throughout the year, I am sure.
