Badwater Ultramarathon – Why Do They Do It?

The 135 mile sauna run has come to a close for another year with a bit of additional excitement of a nearby forest fire awaiting the later finishers. Fortunately the fire was contained and the race continued but for nine hours the race finish was moved to the 131 mile mark. Just when you think it can’t get any hotter, a forest fire crackles nearby.

This years winners:

male – Marcos Farinazzo (BRA) – 23:39:18

female – Jamie Donaldson (USA – CO) – 27:20:18 (won 2008 as well)

Our SMW regional runner Arnold Begay finished the race in 58:12:51. Great job!

So Why Do They Do It?

So what is the lure of ultra endurance events like Badwater. If you ask the athletes, they will all probably have their own unique answer to this personal question.

As one sorts through all of the various responses a simple underlying theme must be embedded somewhere within that simply states; because I think I can.

Be active – Feel the buzz!
