ESSN Energy – An Organic Energy Drink

While in Costco I ran into an organic energy drink called essn ENERGY ($20 for 24). I don’t normally drink these high sugar/caffeine drinks but I have been wanting to experiment a bit with an energy drink for some of my ultra races to see if it can help provide a boost towards the later stages of the race. This seemed like the perfect candidate.

So what are the unique ingredients?

  • Filtered water
  • Organic Evaporated Cane Juice
  • Pomegranate Limeflower flavor
  • Organic Dried Guarana Extract (240mg) – the caffeine source
  • Organic Brazilian Dried Yerba Mate Extract (360mg) – another stimulant and mineral source
  • Organic Kenyan Green Tea Powder – antioxidant and stimulant
  • Citric Acid
  • Vitamin Blend (B3, B6, Pantothenic Acid, B12)

My first test-drive of the drink occurred toward the end of a four hour training run. I took a sip (or gulp) and immediately noticed the fresh, crisp, lime flavor. After running for over three hours in 90 degree heat, an ice cold drink definitely lifted my spirits. Not sure about anything beyond that at this point.

I haven’t had a chance to use it in a race situation yet but plan to give it a try in some local ultra events coming soon. I will let you know how that goes.

Have you tried this drink before? What are your thoughts on it?

I work 12 hour nights in a Level I trauma center as an RN. I also have Lupus (mild). I actually do not like the taste of these but kept buying them just because it was easy to pick them up during my shopping at Costco. Gradually started noticing that I felt great after drinking one – not geared up or hyper but no more brain fog, or the nausea, profound fatigue that comes with a tough night.

Hi Darlene – That is interesting to hear how ESSN worked for you. I can only imagine that 12 hour nights can be a bit tough at times. Thanks for sharing.

Diddo Darlene! I am not an energy drink person (I am 50 years old for crying out loud!) However, I have gone back to school after 30 years out and my brain is in a bit of a fog. I tried this drink and found the exact same results as Darlene. Clearer thinking, more positive attitude. While I love the taste, my kids do not — go figure. Hoping to find a place that still sells this drink, as I am almost.
